How to get started (part 1)

Firstly, there are no magic formulas. All the gurus in the internet say do this and do that and you will see your profits climb. If it was that easy we would all be millionaires. The truth is that out of 100 people that give it a go, only around 5 make any money out of internet sales and marketing.  It is all going to depend on you and how much  effort you put into the game. Believe me at the beginning, a game is what it is. You can beat the odds if you have the stamina. There will be people out there who do better than you and most will do  worse  as long as your staying power is there.

That said and done you need to get started. Best bet is to have some kind of web site that will promote the products that want to sell. There are affiliate programs that will give you one for free, others work on the traffic you send them from any source such as banners, pay per click programs links from your web site etc.  You can be succesfull without a web site one but it takes a bit more experience. Most affiliate programs work on the basis of a unique ID you get when you register as a partner or affiliate. You tag this on to the end of the URL of the website you are linking to and they identify  the viewer who clicks on it  as one of your leads. You then get commision on any sales made to that viewer.  Sounds like a piece of cake doesn't it?  Actually it is that simple except you have to get viewers, and then you have to get them to click on the link and then they still have to buy something or register. I am not gointg to try and give lessons in marketing, however here are a few common sense tips to follow if you so wish
.

At the beginning stick to what you know and identify with. If you are or were single you will have had the experience of trying to meet people and will know what attracts and what repels people. Use that knowledge to,  as an example, get into the dating affiliate programs. If you are a house owner you probably know something about morgages, home improvements, and decoration. Don't make the same mistakes I did and try to get into something I did not have a clue about just because it sounded I could make money out of it. I have learnt to recognize I have no idea about some things and will never learn. For example as a married man with two grown up daughters and no other men in the house you would think I should have picked up something about beauty products. Totally wrong, if I am sent out to get a lipstick I need precise instructions. If I choose something myself it will always be too something like too red ,not red enough, differnet shade red to my handbag, last years colour, too glossy,  not glossy enough and on and on. I certainly do not beleive I can sell or buy lipstick so I won't even give it a try.

Identify a target market for your product and stick to it. Try and focus on a niche .Confine your marketing to a selected audience and attack it well. Going too broad will only reduce your return on investment. For example targeting a US female audience for slimming products may be a good idea but might not work that well in Ethiopia.

Set yourself a marketing budget and stick to it. Only invest more if you see returns on investment. Work really hard on getting free traffic to your site or affiliate program . It is very easy but very expensive to rely on paid advertising such as pay per click only. The pro's out there have worked out the odds and you will find they can and will outbid you for advertising space. The beauty of the internet is that there is a lot you can promote at no cost but you have to dig to find it. I am not saying paid avertising does not work but get into it gradually, intelligently and within the limits you can afford.

Set up a web site. This is easier and cheaper than what you may believe.  Think it through, make sure of what message you want to communicate, what product or image or information you want to promote and think carefully of who you want to impart that information to. Write for them, not for you. Don't know how to write good copy? Crib it, there are thousands of  articles free for you to use on the net, some people want some money for some of them but most just want acknowledgement. Keep your web site fresh, add and change articles on a regular basis so visitors keep coming back. serialise an article with "more to come next week" to  keep  people interested. Start a forum with input from visitors so there is new material each time. Set up an opt in mailing list , keep in touch with your visitors and promote in each mailshot one of your tagged links.

and on that note "more to come next week", next week in part two, creating free traffic and more on setting up a website. Even easier for you sign up to my mailing list and I will send you part two (including some fantastic offer) by mail .I promise no spam, not more than 1 e-mail per week, virus protected and I will never, never sell or rent my mailing lists.
